Are You a Man or a Wolf?

by Miranda Reese

Are you man or wolf?
I asked when he took me by the hand
Though I did not care much for the answer.

Heart between teeth
I feel it flutter like a trapped bird
It knows what I do,
That it’s durable until it’s not

What do I care about
the manner of beast that guides me?
As long as it takes me where I want to be,
Not at all

It pops like a bruised grape
With a rush of salt and iron
It drips from my lips scarlet and angry
Teeth grinds against flesh
Bone grinds against bone

Are you man or wolf?
I ask as he closes the door behind us
Though I do not care much for the answer.
